Program Description:
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution offers an informal internship program in which a limited number of college undergraduates and graduate students are accepted as Guest Students in our laboratories on a year-round basis. Advanced high school students enrolled in Upper Cape and Island schools may also be eligible as guest students. Guest Student positions at WHOI are extremely limited, and the ability to place a Guest Student depends on whether the student's interests and academic background coincide with available openings at the time the application is received. Scientists do have the ability to invite their own Guest Students, so it is strongly recommended that a prospective student contact the scientist(s) with whom he or she is interested in working. Guest Students are responsible for arranging their own room and board, and are expected to arrive with their own health insurance. Guest Student appointments are made for periods of up to one year. An appointment can be renewed if the circumstances warrant it, and the student is in good standing at his or her home institution. WHOI does not issue academic credit for Guest Student work, but a description and evaluation of a student's work is available upon request. Guest Students are expected to observe the regular working hours of the Institution and are encouraged to participate in the many seminars and lecture programs of the Woods Hole scientific community.
Program Restrictions:
A complete college level application includes:

* Completed Guest Student application form. * A current CV or resume that shows educational background and work experiences.
* An official transcript and/or other official documents of complete undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate school record to date.
* At least two letters of recommendation from professors, employers, others excluding family (forms are provided with the application).
* A well-written and concise statement of the applicant's interests, future education and career plans, and reasons for applying to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Your statement should include a description of the WHOI scientists with whom you have had contact.

An application will not be considered until all the application materials have been received.
