Program Description:
The Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) was initiated in 1994. The scholarships are intended to encourage outstanding students to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in the food and agricultural sciences or the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. This scholarship program is to increase the multicultural diversity of the food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce, and advance the educational achievement of all Americans by providing competitive grants to eligible colleges and universities. The MSP provides funding to support undergraduate or DVM training through student scholarship support and a cost-of-education allowance to the institution. For the FY 2007 award cycle CSREES intends to also support Student Experiential Learning (SEL) opportunities for eligible USDA Multicultural Scholars to enable eligible USDA Multicultural Scholars to: (a) participate in research projects focused on multidisciplinary topics of national importance at institutions or organizations other than their own; (b) complete apprenticeships, internships, or similar participatory learning experiences (e.g., practicum for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, or internships abroad or externships in the private or public sector); and (c) complete study abroad programs relevant to their majors. The SEL awards for eligible USDA Multicultural Scholars will only be available as provided for within this grant announcement.
