Grants to Replace Animals in Research
Program URL:
http://www.scienceroom.org/apply-for-funding
Type of Scientists Funded:
Junior Faculty, Administrator, Senior Scientist/Faculty
Program Description:
The Dr Hadwen Trust is currently inviting new grant applications for research proposals to develop, validate or implement non-animal methods which contribute to the replacement of animal experiments in medical research.
Grants are available for a maximum of £45,000 per annum for up to 3 years, inclusive of salary, consumables and equipment (i.e. awards will not exceed £135,000 over 3 years). Grants for research proposals of shorter duration than 3 years will be considered pro rata. Research must be based in the United Kingdom.
Research which requires or involves the use of living animals in any way, even though the ultimate aim may be to replace their use, will not be supported. Neither do we offer grants for research which uses (non-human) animal cells, animal tissues or animal cell lines. Acceptable approaches may include human cells, human cell lines, human tissues, micro-organisms, human sub-cellular components, in vitro techniques, physico-chemical techniques, computer modeling, clinical studies or epidemiology.
Proposals to replace animals in all areas of medical research are welcome. Priority will be given to proposals that aim to replace procedures on animals that can cause substantial pain and suffering, and/or have the potential to replace large numbers of animals.
On this occasion The Dr Hadwen Trust is especially (but not solely) interested in the following topics: Tissue engineering and advanced cell culture techniques; Computer modeling; Systems biology; Disease models; Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease; Infectious diseases; Cancer research; Cardiovascular disease; Replacement of animal antibodies ; Replacement of animal serum in research or methods to promote the replacement of animal serum. However, proposals in other research fields are also welcome, if they have the potential to replace animal experiments.
